Welcome to Second Grade
Below you will find useful second grade information. Please visit the pages linked above for specific subjects.
Welcome to second grade at Terry Elementary School! This will be an exciting year for all students as we work on learning more about reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
School hours are from 7:25 to 2:25 every day. Students should be on campus NO EARLIER THAN 7:15, as there is no supervision before that time. If your child is going to eat breakfast in the school cafeteria, make sure to allow enough time for that before school begins at 7:35. If your child arrives at school after 7:40, he/she needs to go to the office for a tardy slip before going to class. If you need to pick your child up early from school, please go to the office first to sign out your child. They will notify us to send him/her to the office to go home. At the end of the day parents of walkers and car riders please wait for your children outside of the school building. Walkers will be dismissed at 2:20 and car riders at 2:25.
If your child is absent, please either call the school at 447-5600 or send a note with him/her the following day to explain the absence. We expect children to attend each day unless they are sick. If you need to take your child to the doctor or out for vacation, PLEASE try to schedule these for days or times when we are not in school. Your child misses a lot of important instruction when he/she is not here every day.
Children are expected to follow school and classroom rules to make the most of their learning time. Student behavior will be tracked using a color card system. Yellow represents a warning to change a behavior. Orange will result in a time out in the classroom to think about good choices and a problems solving conversation with the teacher. Blue will indicate a time out in another classroom and red will result in a behavior document. Your child will record their color in their planner daily for you to see and praise their good choices. Students who stay on green for the entire week or have up to two yellow warnings will participate in Fun Friday – an extra recess or fun activity in the classroom.
All children need to bring a backpack to school each day so they have a safe way to carry their papers and books to and from school. Make sure that you check your child’s backpack every day for important information. Your child needs to keep the backpack cleaned out so that it doesn’t get too heavy to carry.
Planners will come home every day with homework and behavior recorded. Write notes to your child’s teacher or changes of end of day transportation in the planner. Please sign your child’s planner daily!
Homework will be sent home in your child’s blue communication folder. Students are expected to read for 15min. and fill out their Reading Log daily. Home work for other subjects will be sent home 2-3 nights a week. Please check your child’s planner for homework assignments and spelling words. Students will need to have the following supplies at home for doing their homework: pencils, erasers, crayons, scissors, and glue. You can buy these items at stores like Big Lots, Dollar Tree, 99 ¢ Store, Office Depot, Wal Mart, Staples, Target, or K Mart. Students also need a quiet, well-lit place at home for them to read and do their homework.
Students at Terry Elementary School are expected to wear a uniform to school every day. The uniform consists of navy blue or tan pants, shorts, or skirts, and a solid color polo shirt with a collar. Shirts should NOT have pictures or other designs on them. On Fridays blue jeans may be worn with a Terry t-shirt or uniform shirt. Contact the school office for more information about uniforms.
Children in second grade benefit from having a regular bedtime every night. Kids who do not get enough sleep have a hard time paying attention in class and will not learn as much as they should. Please try to have your child get at least 8-10 hours of sleep each night.
Our school day this year will include blocks of time for reading and writing, math, science, and social studies. Our first hour of the day will be math. Our main reading time will be in the morning also and will include vocabulary and word study. Social Studies and Science content will be taught throughout our reading and writing blocks. Our main writing block will be in the afternoon with emphasis on grammar and complete sentences in the beginning with paragraphs and short stories expected later in the year.
All classes will receive one hour weekly of physical education instruction from our site P.E. specialist. They will also receive an hour of music and art from those specialist teachers. Classes will visit the computer lab for one hour each week.
All classes will also be visiting the school library on a regular basis. Students will be able to check out books to take home provided that they have returned the last books they checked out. Your child will be responsible to take care of and return on time all books checked out.
Some teachers send home order forms for books that they can order from book clubs such as Scholastic. These book clubs offer good books at great prices and are an excellent way to add to your home library. Children need to have their own books to read and take care of at home. Many studies have proven that students who read a lot and who have been read to at home are better readers. These book clubs can help you do this by offering inexpensive books for purchase. You can send in cash or a check when you order these books; books usually arrive in two weeks after the order is sent in.
We know that birthdays are special days in a second grader’s life. If your child wants to include the class in a birthday celebration at school we will be celebrating birthdays each month on the last Friday of the month. We will of course make it a special day for your child on their actual birthday but we will celebrate the birthdays for the month on the last Friday, if you wish to send treats on that day you are welcome to. However we suggest that instead of sending in cakes, cupcakes, or other treats, that you bring in non-food items, such as special pencils or erasers, bookmarks, or even a book to donate to our classroom library in your child’s name. We appreciate your support in developing healthier lifestyles in our children.
